New Breed Added to the 2020 Westminster Dog Show: Azawakh
The 2020 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is proud to welcome a new breed to the competition this year, the Azawakh.
The Azawakh's Appearance
Belonging to the Hound group, the Azawakh is a tall and elegant sight hound with a short, fine coat that comes in a variety of colors. Similar to Middle Eastern and South Indian sight hounds, the Azawakh’s slender body is built for speed. However, its short flat back with long legs give it a distinctive appearance that sets it apart.
The Azawakh's History
The Azawakh is an ancient breed originally bred to guard livestock and assist in hunting. Known for speed and endurance, the Azawakh was a loyal companion to nomadic tribes roaming modern-day Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. This region of West Africa also includes the Azawagh Valley, after which the breed is named.
Azawakh Temperament
As with all dogs, each Azawakh is an individual. However, a well-socialized Azawakh can typically be affectionate, gentle, and loyal. This breed can also be cautious around new people and, if not properly socialized, can be shy and fearful in new situations.
Other Facts About This New Dog Breed
When indoors, the Azawakh serves as a calm indoor family companion. When outdoors, the Azawakh can move at speeds at up to 40 miles per hour, helping him excel in sports like Lure Coursing.
