It is natural to want to do everything and anything for our pets, but as much as they seem like a family member, albeit a four-legged one, there are some things they can’t have. In this article we will be exploring whether Metronidazole for dogs is safe or not. Now more so than ever, there are lots of treatment options available to help our dogs stay fit and healthy, especially medication such as antibiotics and pain relief for dogs. But, are they really safe for our pets? Let’s find out.

What is Metronidazole?

This type of medication is an antibiotic for dogs. Metronidazole for dogs has many uses, including the treatment of some conditions of the large intestine. The antibiotic targets what are known as anaerobic bacteria, as well as treating protozoal parasites. Metronidazole for dogs is sometimes prescribed in combination on together with other antibiotics.

How Does Metronidazole for Dogs’ Work?

Metronidazole works by killing the bacteria by breaking down their DNA and inhibiting the manufacture of bacterial protein. It is one of the antibiotics that can treat infections that are within the central nervous system because it can cross what is known as the blood-brain barrier.

Are There Any Side Effects of Metronidazole for Dogs?

Side effects of this antibiotic are relatively rare, as metronidazole is usually tolerated well in dogs. However, as with any medication, there is the chance of side-effects, and your vet will determine the correct dose to minimize this risk. Though extremely rare, metronidazole can have an effect on the central nervous system and liver. However, the more serious side effects such as paralysis, rapid heart rate, or difficulty breathing, are more likely to occur in dogs that are on a high dosage, or are going through a long-term treatment that includes the use of metronidazole.

Common side effects to look out for in your dog are:

  • Loss of appetite.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Any vomiting or nausea.
  • Excessive sleeping/not wanting to exercise.
  • Drooling or gagging.

How to Administer Metronidazole for Dogs?

As with any medication for dogs, there is a specific way to administer the correct dosage to your pet, which is based on their age, and weight. This will be specified by your vet. Even though metronidazole is considered safe for dogs to ingest, it is not recommended for pregnant bitches, or very young puppies. Metronidazole is also used with caution in dogs that are suffering from health conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, or seizures.

The dose used is determined by weight of the dog and the particular condition that metronidazole is being used to treat. Metronidazole for dogs is often given with food, and should always be given for the full specified treatment time, as advised by your vet. Do not give an extra or double dose of metronidazole. If you have missed a dose, check with your vet as to the best course of action. Depending on how long it is since the missed dose, they may recommend simply continuing with the dosage plan when the next dose is due.

Is Metronidazole Safe for Dogs?

Metronidazole is considered a suitable antibiotic for dogs, and your vet will decide whether it is the right medication for your pet by taking into account any pre-existing medical conditions and your pet’s general health. If your dog shows any unusual signs when they are on metronidazole, such as a decreased appetite, vomiting or seizures, you should call your vet for advice.

Metronidazole for dogs can be an extremely effective antibiotic, which allows vets to treat a range of medical conditions. By making sure to stick to the administration plan and by keeping a close eye on your pet’s behavior, you will help to ensure the treatment is effective and so get your dog back to its normal self.
