Investing in Renewable Electricity to Help Make the Food that Powers Your Pet

Climate change is one of our planet’s greatest challenges, and it requires us all to take significant action to make an impact.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions Through Renewable Electricity

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions Through Renewable Electricity

While the majority of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions impact comes from our agriculture value chain and the sourcing of our ingredients, our efforts to reduce emissions in our operations—where we make your pet’s favorite products—are also critical. Increasing our investments in and use of renewable electricity is an important part of how we support Nestlé’s global commitment to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Where Things Stand Today

Where Things Stand Today

As of today, 95 percent of Purina’s electricity in our facilities in the US is attributed to renewable sources, including investments in renewable electricity like wind and solar power, helping advance our efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with our operations. We are on pace to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity by 2025.

Wind Power at Purina

Wind Power at Purina

We source wind power through local utilities at factories in Iowa and Missouri and are engaged in a physical power purchase agreement to source wind power for our two factories in Pennsylvania, which provides traceability back to a wind farm.

Solar Power at Purina

Solar Power at Purina

Our parent company, Nestlé, has invested in several large-scale solar projects to reduce carbon emissions associated with US operations and to help expand the availability of solar electricity on the US grid. In addition to our direct investment, we’ve purchased 100 percent of the renewable electricity attributes—also known as Renewable Energy Certificates—generated by these projects’ electricity production, so we can source renewable electricity for Purina operations.

Advocating for Change

Advocating for Change

To have the greatest impact, shifting to renewable electricity sources is a change that needs to happen both within and outside our walls. With that in mind, we also help drive collective action across the pet industry and use our voice to advocate for better climate policies on Capitol Hill and with industry stakeholders to expand renewable energy infrastructure and incentives and help work toward a more sustainable future. For example, Purina supports a community solar program in Dunkirk, New York, that helps expand access to solar power through the local utility. We also help voice support of sustainability-focused projects in other communities where we have operations.
