I forgot to give my dog his monthly heartworm medication. What should I do?

Listen

Heartworm is a disease spread by mosquitoes, and your dog could be at risk if you live in an infested area. If your veterinarian recommends a monthly preventative heartworm medication, administer it regularly until the vet tells you it is safe to stop for the winter. In some areas, dogs may need medicine year-round.

If you forget to give your dog his heartworm medication one month, call your vet. He’ll likely recommend that you give the dog his pill as soon as you recognize you’ve missed it and then continue as normal next month. Usually missing one dose is not a problem, but if you forget for two consecutive months, your dog may be susceptible to heartworm. So ask your veterinarian to check him out.
