In general, what's the prognosis for canine cancer?

Listen

Now that dogs are living longer than ever, they are more likely to develop cancer. Cancer is the most common fatal disease in dogs – in fact, it accounts for almost half of deaths in dogs older than ten. The most prevalent forms are skin and mammary cancers.

But the good news is that early detection and modern medical intervention can often cure canine cancer. So the best thing you can do as a dog owner is pay attention to any changes in your dog’s health or behavior. If you notice any lumps or bumps on your pet, your veterinarian can sample the cells with a needle to determine if they are benign. And if your dog does develop a tumor, your veterinarian may be able to remove it surgically or treat it with radiation.
