My dog barks and is destructive while I’m away and annoys my neighbors. How can I get him to stop?

A hyper hound left alone can spell trouble for you and your neighbors. Victoria Voith, an Animal Behaviorist at Western University, explains why some dogs bark and chew things when their owners are out.

“Most of the time, dogs are destructive when the owners are away because they have separation anxiety and destructive behavior is a means of trying to gain re-access to the owner.”

To prevent such bothersome behavior, Voith suggests slowly acclimating your pet to being alone. Also make sure to exercise your dog regularly and provide toys to help him get through the day.

If the dog’s still anxious in your absence, call an animal behaviorist or ask your veterinarian about prescription medication.
