![]() How do Senior Citizens Benefit from Caring for a cat?If you have an older relative, you might want to ask if she’d like a cat. Older people with pets tend to live independently longer than pet-less seniors. Studies also show that pets can lower our heart rate and blood pressure and reduce the frequency of serious illness. So your older relative may like having a cat to help keep her mind and body active. Cats are relatively easy to care for, but if your relative says she’d like one, suggest a short-haired kitty so that grooming isn’t much of a chore. You might also recommend that she play with the cat in the event – that’s the best way to make sure both of them have a good night’s sleep. -Dr. Larry McDaniel, DVM for the "Purina® Animal Instincts" Podcast Series
